Loco SUP Tuition
If you didn’t already know, boss man Joe started his journey into SUP some 7-8 years ago and was the first person to set up a stand up paddle board school in the North of England (Boardskillz). Although Joe spends a lot more of his time running Loco these days he does still enjoy teaching people on a 1-2-1 and small group basis, believing that these formats produce the best results in terms of learning. With a team of junior SUP surfing stars (who regularly make the podium at the Nationals) and a background in coaching other sports Joe has streamlined the learning process; dispensing with much of the boring theory and focussing specifically on core skills, practical safety for the beginner and training muscle memory for success in paddle surfing further down the line.
If you have the budget 1-2-1 is the best way to learn how to SUP with success being much quicker in 9/10 cases. Joe will meet you for a 2hr private lesson pretty much any time midweek (including evenings) and by arrangement at the weekends although at peak times he tends to be busy with 1 day fast track SUP courses so he recommends booking your 1-2-1 lesson well in advance and you may need to be flexible on Sat/Sun.
The 1 Day Fast Track SUP Course has been specifically designed to take you from zero to hero over the course of one day! The course consists of 2 sessions, one on flat water to build confidence and establish basic skills, then there’s a break for lunch (included in price) then for the afternoon session we’ll either migrate to the coast and show you how to catch your first wave safely or if the conditions are unsuitable we’ll train for the surf on flat water which means establishing muscle memory, learning to paddle in the surf stance, advanced board trimming and turning techniques as well using the paddle effectively. To run the course we require a minimum of 4 paying clients. That said if you’re happy paying for 4 we’ll entertain smaller groups of 2-3. We can cater for a maximum of 8 but 6 is generally a good number.
Once you’ve got the essentials through 1-2-1 lessons or our 1 day fast track course it’s time to think about one of our surf clinics. We run these around suitable forecasts, opting to steer clear of busy beaches like Tynemouth for safety reasons we’ll normally head up to Northumberland but will also consider trips to Saltburn and Scarborough as well as heading West. We require a group of at least 4 to run these full day trips. The price includes transport, drinks and snacks, equipment hire and tuition on the day. You’re guaranteed to make progress quickly with the right conditions at an un-crowded spot, how could you not?! These clinics are run on a first come first served basis so pre-booking a space is a great idea to avoid disappointment.
Alongside Joe’s UK teaching programme he runs 1 week intensive paddle surfing clinics in Morocco and South America over the winter months so be sure to ask if you’d like to travel and surf some bigger bumps. You’ll need to be intermediate standard up to make the most of these trips.
As some people have asked about kit, we only use hard Loco boards and quality SUP paddles not cheap inflatables boards that usually make learning unrealistic with excessive volume and heavy aluminium paddles that can cause shoulder injuries both often hindering progress rather than helping it! We supply 4/3 wetsuits to fit most frames. Those who feel the cold are advised to bring a thermal layer for underneath other just bring s swimsuit/trunks etc, a towel and a change of clothes.
