Loco gets involved with Surfers Against Sewage Demonstration

Loco X Surfers Against Sewage, Loco gets involved with Surfers Against Sewage Demonstration | Loco Surfing

Loco gets involved with Surfers Against Sewage Demonstration. It was great to get out and support Surfers Against Sewage and the campaign to highlight the recent and continual CSO incidents at Godrevy Beach.  This is my favourite break to take out my Loco Windsup and my session on the 28th June was cut short by a large discharge of untreated human sewage.  This was due to the opening by South West Water of the combined sewage overflow along the Red River.

They are permitted by the environment agency to do this during extreme weather events to prevent sewage backing up towards peoples homes.  However we’ve had 5 sewage discharges at Godrevy in a seven week period:   22nd May 2014, 26th May 2014, 26th June 2014, 28th June 2014, 7th July 2014.   We seem to be having a hot dry summer and I don’t believe that these releases are related to extreme weather events.  It looks like we’ve had a pretty warm dry start to summer.

Loco gets involved with Surfers Against Sewage Demonstration. We had fantastic support from local media including TV coverage from BBC and ITV regional news as well as local newspapers.  it’s great that the message is keeping in the news.

Check out the ITV coverage here  http://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/story/2014-07-25/protest-against-sewage-left-on-cornish-beach/

If you didn’t make to the event there are several actions you can take now!

1) download SAS’s water quality app so you know when sewage is discharging at your favourite beach at www.sas.org.uk

2) sign the online petition to Stop Sewage discharges

3) report sewage discharges to the Environment Agency every time you witness a pollution event 0800 80 70 60

More details from Surfers Against Sewage on the campaign: http://www.sas.org.uk/news/campaigns/godrevy-gwithian-community-demonstration-against-sewage-pollution/

I may be in the Asylum as a part of Team Loco, but I’m not certifiable crazy like those that feel it’s acceptable to pump human sewage onto a beach! It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up and voice your disgust for this kind of corporate pollution. Just think fewer rashes, ear infections and beautiful clear water which 100% helps boost beach use whatever your chosen sport!
